Park Boulevard Median Project 2016

The Park Boulevard Medians have been revamped in consideration of the water usage reductions throughout Southern California. This new landscape is estimated to save approximately 500,000 gallons of water each year and 8-12 hours of maintenance labor each week!

 Nearly one-half mile of medians along Park Boulevard (extending from CA 163 to San Diego Zoo)
 Approximately 53,000 sq. ft. of turf removed
 Nearly 2,000 drought-tolerant plants installed
 Approximately 45 cubic yards of rock cobble installed
 Pop-up irrigation removed; new, efficient drip irrigation installed
 City of San Diego received $50,000 from SoCal Water Smart for turf removal
 Plant material themed to adjacent areas of Balboa Park
 Project Budget: $150,000 ($3/sq. ft.)
 Friends of Balboa Park contribution: $98,838

 May 2015 – Planning begins
 October 2015 – Construction/planting begins
 December 2015 – Project completed
 April 6, 2016 – Ribbon-cutting

 Water Conservation: The use of waterwise plants allows for significantly less water consumption while landscape design helps dramatically reduce irrigation and rainwater run-off; annual estimated savings: 500,000-790,000 gallons
 Beautification: The selection of waterwise and native plants featured add color and texture to the parkway and enhance the beauty of the otherwise utilitarian roadway feature
 Cooler temperatures: Reducing the amount of concrete and replacing it with plants help cool the surrounding area, reducing urban heat island effect
 Showcase: The design serves as an example by showcasing the benefits and beauty of waterwise landscapes, encouraging residents to adopt sustainable solutions
